Advice On Using Gramoxone On Cotton

Oct 28, 2013

From Keith Edmisten, NCSU Cotton Specialist:

“I am getting questions about Gramoxone on cotton due to the frost warning forecast. We have worked with Gramoxone and it has been very unreliable and is usually only used as a last resort on cotton that is 80% or more open as it it likely to freeze bolls that are not highly mature. A rate that works in one situation will freeze bolls in another situation. It is very much like having a frost on cotton, the result varies from ok to bad, based on the rate and the maturity of the cotton and is not easy to predict. You will likely end up with leaves stuck on the plant and you may freeze bolls and kill plants enough to cause bark problems. If you are going to do it you need to pick quickly if the gramoxone kills part of the plant and realize you are going to have a lot of trash.
It reminds me a lot of frost damage to cotton. At least the frost is free, I would wait on whatever is going to happen with the frost and re-evaluate after this weekend.”
