Cold Claims Illinois Horse

An Illinois owner is facing animal cruelty charges after a horse died after being exposed to severe weather.

In a written statement, the Kane County, Illinois, Animal Control said personnel responded to a tip about a horse that had died on a Maple Park, Illinois, farm on Jan. 7.

Upon arrival, investigators discovered the dead animal along with 10 horses living outside in frigid temperatures, the statement said. Investigators found the conditions of the live horses to be otherwise law compliant, the statement said.

Animal control personnel notified the owner, who was not named in the statement, in writing that shelter must be provided for the live horses, the statement said; the owner complied.

Animal control personnel cited the owner with failure to provide the dead horse sufficient quantity of wholesome food, water, adequate shelter, and protection from the weather.
