Fueling Demand, Sustainably

Biodiesel and Bioheat® add new power to soybean farmers’ story

It began 25 years ago as a way to make good use of surplus soybean oil. Today, the biodiesel industry has become a great example of modern-day agriculture to consumers, environmental groups and individuals curious about farm life.

Biodiesel is recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as America’s only commercially available Advanced Biofuel in part because it uses soybean oil as its main feedstock. And, as the biodiesel industry advances, so does the knowledge among environmental groups that soybean oil is important to one of the leading carbon-reduction strategies available with today’s vehicle technologies.

But it didn’t start out that way, says Tom Verry, director of outreach and development for the National Biodiesel Board (NBB).

“When California passed its low carbon fuel standard, they originally didn’t want to include biodiesel made from soy because they didn’t believe soybean farming was sustainable,” says Verry. “Today, by hosting farm and biodiesel plant visits with environmental stakeholders, we’ve corrected that perception.”
