Harper Government Invests in Creation of Price Transparency Tool

Edmonton, Alberta – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Producers who market their crops on their own or through a broker will soon have access to reliable and timely crop and price data at their fingertips. Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today announced $742,725 in funding that will enable the Alberta Wheat Commission to analyze gaps in crop data and price reporting for grains and offer a web solution that provides industry with timely, accurate and transparent market information.

This project responds to grain industry and producer concerns about the availability of market price information. The project will identify the crop and price data needs for all participants in the grains value chain (including primary producers, elevators, processors, transporters, etc.) and will offer an unbiased and verifiable online source for that data. Making this data available to producers and their brokers is expected to enhance and improve the market for all participants, most specifically farmers.
