Horticulture Congress, Trade Show Provides Many Connections

Agritourism business owners, produce growers and farmers can attend several workshops and network with a variety of professionals at this year's Indiana Horticulture Congress and Trade Show in Indianapolis.

The conference will take place Jan. 20-22 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West, 2544 Executive Drive. A diverse group of speakers will discuss topics such as agritourism, fresh vegetables, fruit, wine grapes and organic farming, each having several related breakout sessions.

Peter Hirst, Purdue University professor of horticulture, says the trade show will feature over 60 exhibitors offering products and services that support the industry.

"We expect around 800 growers to participate in the Indiana Horticultural Congress," said Hirst. "Growers attend for a number of reasons, including the educational sessions, the trade show and the networking and camaraderie with other growers and industry personnel. New growers or those thinking of getting into commercial production will find the opportunity to meet established growers and suppliers invaluable."

Food safety and regulatory concerns, pest and disease control, marketing, processing and production practices are among the subjects to be discussed in the sessions.

During the trade show, attendees will be able to talk with vendors of irrigation supplies, plant protection products, seeds, processed foods and equipment.

Special events include:

* A reception to celebrate the Indiana Winery and Vineyard Association's s 40th anniversary

* Cider judging contest.

* Horticulture Congress social hour.

* Silent auction.

* Pesticide core exam.

* Pesticide applicator recertification program.

Certified private pesticide applicators may attend a recertification session on Jan 21 or 22. There is a $10 fee to attend the session, and participants must know their private applicator license number. Licensed commercial applicators in Category 1 may attend sessions for their continuing certification hours.
