Livestock Mission To Kazakhstan And Turkey

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF) is leading a trade mission to Kazakhstan and Turkey with a focus on livestock and genetics. This mission will focus on building relationships and supporting Alberta’s industry in their business with both Kazakhstan and Turkey.

“Significant opportunities exist in the livestock and genetics sectors and Alberta is seeking to become a strategic partner with Kazakhstan in these areas,” says Aarij Bashir, trade and relations officer, AF, Edmonton. “Kazakhstan as identified its livestock sector as a priority and plans to build its cattle herd considerably, with the goal of increasing its beef exports to Russia.”

In collaboration with the Canadian Embassy in Astana, AF will engage with the local government and authorities during this mission to advocate for favourable policies towards the import of live cattle from Canada. In addition, meetings will be arranged with pre-qualified buyers of live cattle and genetics for the Alberta businesses on the mission.

The mission will include a stopover in Turkey. “Federal Minister Ritz met with Turkish Agriculture Minister Mehmet Mehdi Eker in Istanbul earlier this year and secured an agreement to open market access for Canadian breeding cattle to Turkey,” says Bashir. “This mission will seek to build relationships with the Turkish government and industry stakeholders to provide insight into opportunities for export of live cattle and genetics to the Turkish market.”
