New Soybean Webcast: Fungicide Resistance

Sep 22, 2014

ST. PAUL, Minn.-- As if soybean growers didn’t have enough to worry about with weed resistance, key diseases such as Frogeye Leaf Spot and Rhizoctonia Root/Stem Rot are now showing resistance to certain classes of fungicides.

Pathogen resistance to fungicides is becoming an increasingly challenging problem in the management of crop diseases and is threatening the performance of some otherwise potent and useful commercial fungicides.

The Plant Management Network has published a new ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcast to help facilitate fungicide resistance education for growers and consultants. These webcasts were collectively funded through a United Soybean Board grant to sustain fungicide effectiveness through fungicide resistance education for growers and crop consultants.

This latest webcast in this series, titled “Fungicide Resistance: A Case Study QoI Resistant Rhizoctonia solani” is the third installment of three talks to help soybean growers and consultants address fungicide resistance issues of key diseases.

This presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in all regions understand the needs and tools for fungicide resistance management in soybean crops.

Through his case studies, Hollier discusses combating a soilborne pathogen, Rhizoctonia solani, through rotational crops that are equally susceptible. This talk also provides information on the latest cultural practices and fungicide alternatives for this scenario.

Other talks included in this fungicide resistance series include:

•         “Management of Frogeye Leaf Spot and Fungicide Resistance” by Heather Kelly, Assistant Professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Tennessee

•         “Principles of Fungicide Resistance: Focusing on Soybean and Corn Production” by Carl A. Bradley, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology and Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois

All three talks are continually open access and can be found in the ‘Grant Outreach Webcasts’ section of ‘Focus on Soybean’, PMN’s webcast resource, located at www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/fos.
