FREMONT, Ohio – Pepper diseases, insects, pests, weeds and how to control them will be among the topics discussed by experts from Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences during a workshop July 31 in Fremont.
Faculty will also discuss options for the control of bacterial wilt through the use of perimeter trap cropping to manage cucumber beetles, said Matt Hofelich, manager of the college’s North Central Agricultural Research Station.
The free 2014 Pepper Field Night will feature presentations from researchers and educators with Ohio State University Extension and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). OSU Extension and OARDC are the outreach and research arms, respectively, of the college.
Participants will learn about the results of the 2014 pepper variety trial, Hofelich said.
During the field day, participants will also learn how to manage the significant problem of bacterial wilt in cantaloupe, he said. Cucumber beetles are the vectors of bacterial wilt in cantaloupe, cucumbers and other cucurbit crops.
The event is from 6-8 p.m. at the North Central Agricultural Research Station, 1165 County Road 43 in Fremont.
The workshop’s agenda also includes:
- Herbicides and weed control in peppers.
- Controlling insect pests in peppers.
- Disease control in peppers.
