Producers Encouraged To Check Soil Temps

An agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada says producers should be out checking soil temperatures as they prepare for spring seeding.

Angela Brackenreed notes canola should be seeded into 10 degrees Celsius, however she adds four or five degrees will be OK if warmer temperatures are in the forecast.

She gives some tips on how to make sure you're getting an accurate reading.

"You want to be taking this at the depth that you're going to be seeding to, so for canola that's about half an inch to an inch," explained Brackenreed. "If you're using a probe thermometer, what you can do is dig a little bit of a hole and put that thermometer in sideways and that will ensure that you're getting a reading from that depth."

Brackenreed suggests taking one reading in the morning and one in the afternoon, and averaging that out over a few days.
