Railways Not Meeting Demand: Ag Transport Coalition Report

The Ag Transport Coalition's first-ever weekly report shows that CN and CP are still behind in meeting their targets.

In grain week 21, CN and CP supplied only 25 per cent of hopper car orders, representing a shortfall of 3,300 cars.

Through the first 21 weeks of the current crop year, the railways are behind 11,461 hopper cars ordered by shippers, which is a shortfall equivalent to 11 per cent of shipper demand. Total customer demand for the year is 106,647.

Timeliness has also declined throughout the crop year for both railways, with only 50 per cent of customer orders being delivered in the week for which cars were ordered.

The Ag Transport Coalition weekly report is part of a five-year transportation strategy and action plan funded by the ag industry and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through Growing Forward 2.
