'Turnip for what?': Michelle Obama dances with a vegetable on Vine

Oct 15, 2014

Only U.S. first lady Michelle Obama could effectively use a dope beat to promote the dopeness of beets — a fact that she proved in (garden!) spades Tuesday evening on The White House's official Vine channel.

The noted vegetable enthusiast and healthy living advocate cross-posted a now-viral 6-second-long Vine video of herself dancing with a turnip on Twitter last night during a White House Q&A session.

"How many calories do you burn every time you 'turn up'?!" asked a participant (dressed as her husband) on Twitter using the hashtag #AskTheFirstLady, referring to a slang term that means, loosely, to get rowdy.

Obama decided to flex her impeccable sense of humor in her reply:

  1.
  2. Hey, Alphacat. The First Lady wants to know... #TurnipForWhat?#AskTheFirstLady #TD4W

  3. "Hey, Alphacat. The First Lady wants to know... #TurnipForWhat?" read the caption of her video, which features the hit 2013 song Turn Down For What by DJ Snake & Lil Jon.

Naturally, the internet went wild over the video.

In less than 20 hours, the Vine has been seen more than 11 million times thanks to retweets from the likes of Ellen Degeneres, U.S. President Barack Obama, and dozens of major news outlets.

The #TurnipForWhat hashtag has now also been used roughly 12,000 times.
