Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Workshop Set Aug. 17-18

By Robert Burns

A “High-Throughput Plant Phenotyping and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles” workshop is scheduled Aug. 17-18 at the Gates Ballroom, Room 2400, in the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M University Campus, College Station.

Registration is limited to 250 people . Before July 31, the cost for graduated students is $20; for postdoctoral students, $40; and $60 for all others. After July 31, all fees will be increased by $100. Registration will include lunch on both days. The workshop will start at 8 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. both days.

To register, go to https://agriliferegister.tamu.edu/HTPPUAV. No onsite registration will be available.

A free webinar of the presentations given on August 17 will be available to those unable to attend, but participants must register for this as well, said Dr. Alex Thomasson, Texas A&M AgriLife Research agricultural engineer, College Station. On the registration website, choose “Webinar Participant,” and a webinar link will be emailed to participants prior to the conference.

The goal of this workshop is to provide attendees an “expert overview and keen practical insights” plant phenotyping — recording physical and/or biochemical characteristics — with unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, Thomasson said, Texas A&M AgriLife Research engineer, College Station.

Thomasson said the first day will feature speakers who are leaders in both fields and focus on how UAVs equipped with high-resolution remote sensors, as well as other automated sensor platforms, can be used to efficiently measure plant traits.

Automating phenotyping promises to greatly enhance and accelerate both conventional and genetic plant breeding, he said.

On the second day, participants will be treated to a UAV demonstration at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Farm near College Station. Busses will transport attendees to the farm. Attendees are advised to wear a hat and sunscreen and use insect repellent.

Group rates are available at two area hotels, the Hilton Garden Inn, Bryan, and Staybridge Suites, College Station.
