| My husband and I are really wanting to start a farm. We are looking at around 40 acres and we know nothing. What is the most profitable livestock to raise? We live in Western KY and right now they are not building any more chicken or hog houses. We are thinking about cattle, but how long would it take to get any return? In order for us to purchase the farm, what ever we decide to do would have to cover the house and land. We just don't know where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck,

There is more than enough knowledge via extension and retail ag services. If you don't want to get into that rent out acres on a share basis in either cattle or tobacco. If you know nothing , its going to be a very exspencive lesson. Your input cost will far out weigh the return on your investment. The cattle market is down right now, it has deciled 7 to 10 cents a year for the past 6 years. Your input cost has increased from 8 to 10 % in the same amount of time maybe even more. Summed up you buy at retail and sell at wholesale, and you cant handle the number of cattle you need to make it even a half way brake even. Go to Vegas your odds are better!!!!!! | | | | Date Posted : 11/27/2009 10:17:32 AM | |
