Variable Rate Manure

he Manitoba Livestock Manure Management Initiative, with funding from the Manitoba Pork Council and the Manitoba Rural Adaptation Council, conducted a study looking at the potential use of variable rate technology when applying liquid hog manure.

"The whole concept of varying the rate is very sound and I think it's something that we'll move to in the future," says Project Leader Scott Dick of Agra-Gold Consulting. "With the limitations in technology that we have today, we want to see a little more progression in technology before we can do a full variable rate application."

He explains the study involved 13 producers, each of whome provided two quarters of land. Manure was applied used the drag hose application method. He says application rates were adjusted by speeding up or slowing down the tractor speed.
