USDA : US Weekly Hay Market Report

California : Compared to last week, Premium and Supreme Alfalfa steady.  Demand good and supply light.  Fair and Good Alfalfa steady.  Demand moderate and supply moderate.  Retail and stable hay steady.  Demand moderate and supply moderate.  Possible rain showers again this weekend.  Producers out spraying weevils when they can.  Milk prices still struggling although on Thursday there was some positive movement.

Texas : Compared to last week:  Hay prices generally steady.  Trade active with moderate to good demand.  Wet and cool weather conditions continued again this week.  Over 95 percent of the state is reporting normal to above normal amounts of precipitation.  Fields and pastures remain to wet for producers to complete spring time work.  A large percentage of livestock throughout the state continue to be supplemented feed as the cool temperatures have limited forage growth.  Hay inventories continue to decrease causing hay to be shipped in from further distances, increasing freight costs and causing prices to remain firm.  Small square bales and dairy quality hay remains in short supply and difficult to find.  Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

Oregon : Compared to last week:  All classes of hay sold fully steady.  Buyer demand moderate for all classes on moderate supplies of hay.  Trading activity light.

Montana : Compared to last week:  Hay prices steady on very limited current sales.  Trade activity mostly light to moderate with moderate demand on moderate buyers inquiry.  Supplemental feeding continuing throughout the state.  All sales FOB the stack and per ton basis in large rounds or large square bales, unless otherwise stated.

Kansas : Hay trade slow to moderate. Demand strong for dairy alfalfa, moderate to strong for grinding and stock cow alfalfa, moderate for alfalfa pellets and grass hay. Alfalfa producers are ready to treat gophers, apply fertilizer and herbicide. The rain this week is more welcome in Western Kansas than other parts of the State that are already saturated, either way it delays Spring field work.Hay use remains moderate to active. Idaho : Compared to last week, Good and Supreme Alfalfa 10.00-15.00 lower compared to last week’s light test. Trade was active this week as new crop season grows closer all the time. Buyer demand light due to lower milk prices with moderate to heavy supplies. Premium retail horse hay lightly tested this week but a lower undertone was noted.

Colorado : Compared to last week: Trade and movement of all classes of hay has been extremely slow.  Demand for upper end dairy hay moderate to good with supply moderate to light.  Grinder quality alfalfa remains steady with moderate demand and moderate to heavy supply.  If you have hay for sale or need hay, use the services of the Colorado Hay and Forage Association website: http://www.coloradohay.org/.

Nevada : Compared to last week, Premium and Supreme Alfalfa steady in limited test.  Demand good and supply very light.  Fair and Good Alfalfa steady.  Demand moderate and supply moderate.  Retail and stable hay steady in light test.  Demand moderate and  supply moderate.  Snow happened in several areas this past week, other areas missed out on any moisture.  Milk prices still in the dumps and struggling to show any positive direction any time soon.

Washington-Oregon : Compared to last week:  Fair and Good Domestic Cattle Alfalfa traded mostly steady with the type of Fair Alfalfa currently on the market being more desirable in color and less bale damage.  Export hay traded steady on a narrow test.  All classes of Retail hay sold fully steady. Wheat Straw sold firm on a thin test.  Buyer demand mostly good for all classes of hay.  Trading activity mostly light.  Hay supplies light to moderate.  Weather throughout the Basin this week windy and not as mild as the previous few.
