Farmers and other members of the agrifood industry are encouraged to attend the fifth annual Local and Regional Food Summit, being held Thursday, November 12th at Heartland Community College in Normal, Illinois.

The main goal of the daylong event, hosted by Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Department of Agriculture and Heartland Community College, is communication and bringing members of the agricultural community up to speed about current and upcoming initiatives.

“This event is an opportunity for farmers and industry to convene and learn about the different local and regional projects that are taking shape and learn from experts in the industry,” said Cynthia Haskins, manager of business development and compliance, Illinois Farm Bureau in a release.

The event will feature a variety of speakers discussing different agricultural issues including:

  • Tara Roberts and Kelly Maynard representing Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative, discussing “How Wisconsin Farmers Came Together to Form a Thriving Grower Cooperative”
  • Spring Valley Farm and Vineyard owners Jerry and Lisa Thurston, discussing “Getting Your Packing House Prepared for Certification”
  • Jim Fraley from Illinois Farm Bureau and Matt White of Bloomington Meats will present tips on being a livestock producer

Registration for the conference is $20, but Farm Bureau Members can attend for only $15. Those interested in attending must register before Friday, November 6th.
