2016 Soybean Vein Necrosis Disease Survey And Thrips Data Now Available

 

We have been studying Soybean Vein Necrosis Disease in the Delaware/Maryland region since 2013 to better understand the disease and if it may have an impact on our soybean production.  The disease is caused by a virus, and moved from plant to plant by small insects known as thrips.  Young thrips can feed on infected soybeans or alternate hosts that contain the virus and transmit it to soybeans during the growing season.  Our data indicate that cropping system and variety play a significant role in SVND and its impact on soybeans in Delaware and Maryland.  This year, we also found that two thrips species which can vector the virus were commonly found in soybeans, but their populations varied with cropping system and time of year.
