Canola Performance Trials: 2016

The 2016 growing season isn’t quite over yet, but some growers are already thinking about what to plant for next year. A great place to look for unbiased variety data that reflect actual production practices is the Canola Performance Trials website at

The searchable database already has five years of data — therefore a wide range of growing season conditions — on yield, height, lodging and days to maturity. This data can be viewed by province, season zone (short, mid or long), herbicide tolerance (HT) system or trial type (small plot or field scale). It can be shown by either searching all the varieties or comparing a couple specific varieties (as a broad comparison or as a head to head comparison). When the 2016 dataset is available (not all the sites have been harvested), it will be posted on the CPT website.

In the meantime, try out some of the update search features on the website, which can produce charts such as the one below that shows a head to head comparison (within the ‘Compare Varieties’ results) between varieties 5440 and 74-44BL for 2011-2015 data from all provinces, all season zones, all field scale sites.

It’s important when using the large machinery to pay extra attention to this farm, so the equipment doesn’t take a swim. The equipment seems big, until I get it out into a 200 acre field.
