Dairy Group Welcomes CETA Impact Mitigation Consultations

Two federal cabinet ministers have announced plans to meet with Canadian dairy industry representatives on the impact of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the EU.

Agriculture Minster Lawrence MacAulay and Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland say they’ll be meeting within the coming 30 days to get industry views on an impact mitigation package.

Dairy Farmers of Canada President Wally Smith welcomes the announcement.

DFC figures CETA will cost between 110 and 150 million dollars a year in revenue and market share for Canadian dairy farmers.

Smith says one of the things DFC will be pushing is a funding program to attract new investments into increasing Canadian processing capacity.

Smith says processors need that increased capacity to compete in the post-CETA market, arguing the time for those investments is before the implementation of the deal.
