Manitoba Chicken Producers New Annual Speciality Quota Program

Manitoba Chicken Producers (MCP) is launching a new program that will offer Manitoba consumers more choice, and provide improved opportunities for smaller scale farmers to meet the demand for different types of meat chickens.

The Annual Speciality Quota Program focuses on smaller or specialized markets that aren’t currently being supplied by registered chicken producers. The program covers specialty chicken breeds, unique weight categories, specialized production methods, and chickens slaughtered in accordance with religious teachings.

Program Highlights
  1. Limited to farmers who are not currently registered producers with MCP.

  2. Interested farmers apply to become a Designated Annual Speciality Producer (see details below).  Applicants must 18 years or older, and residents of Manitoba.

  3. The application deadline is November 18, 2016 for 2017 production.

  4. The cost to apply to the program is $210 (includes GST).

  6. The Annual Speciality Quota allotments are for 10,000 kilograms per year.

  7. Designated Annual Speciality Producers pay an annual designation charge of $525 (includes GST).  Renewal of an annual designation is at the discretion of MCP.

  8. Designated Annual Speciality Producers must own land and buildings suitable for chicken production. Leasing of land and/or buildings is not permitted. Facilities must be certified by MCP.

  9. Designated Annual Speciality Producers must comply with all of the requirements of the national on-farm food safety and animal care programs.  This includes regular farm inspections.

Relentless spring rains are drenching our sheep farm! Despite the downpour, our sheep are fortunate to have a cozy and dry shelter in our barns. Our barns are equipped with curtains on all sides, allowing us to adjust the amount of natural light and fresh air that enters. Whether it's opening them wide to create an outdoor-like environment or shutting them tight to keep the sheep snug and content, our barns provide the perfect refuge from the harsh weather conditions outside.

While we appreciate the nourishing rain that will eventually result in lush pastures and abundant hay during the summer, we are grateful that our sheep are not exposed to the elements and remain healthy. Join us as we lay fresh bedding in every barn, ensuring our sheep's comfort and well-being. Witness the joy of our lambs frolicking in the straw, a true testament to their happiness.

Despite our usual practice of avoiding shipping sheep during adverse weather, today we had to transport a few breeding ewes and a ram to a customer with an inflexible schedule. Discover the breeding stock chosen by the customer and witness how we carefully load them for transport.
