Wheat Update From the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center

The first winter wheat variety plot was seeded in fall 2014 at the Henry J. Stumpf International Wheat Center located about a mile east of Grant. The plot averaged 49 bu/ac with a top yield of 62 bu/ac with Antero. The locations with higher average yields in 2015 were Keith County at 64 bu/ac, Lincoln County at 57 bu/ac, and Hitchcock County with 50 bu/ac.

In 2016 the top winter wheat variety test was in Furnas County with a 91 bu/ac average yield followed by Perkins County with an 80 bu/ac average.

When you combined results from 2015 and 2016, the Wheat Center was tied with Furnas County for the top yield average of 64.5 bu/ac (Table 1) for winter wheat variety tests across Nebraska.

The 2017 winter wheat crop received hail on May 16 which greatly reduced yields. The plot averaged 43 bu/ac with a top yield of 60 bu/ac.

The plot average yields include Scout 66, Turkey and other low yielding varieties.
