Webcast Tackles Fungicide Resistance in Corn and Soybean

From Plant Management Network

ST PAUL, Minn. Fungicide resistance can be a major threat to disease control, and resistance can take hold quickly if fungicides and their applications are not properly managed.

In an effort to help combat this ever-present issue, the USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) funded grants to develop IPM-based corn fungicide guidelines for the North Central U.S. and also support sustainable disease management on field corn in the U.S. Corn Belt.

As part of the outreach efforts for this grant, the Plant Management Network and a team of researchers led by Carl Bradley, Associate Professor of Plant Pathology and Extension Specialist at the University of Illinois, produced one in a series of webcasts to meet the USDA’s objectives.

The latest webcast in this permanently open-access series was authored by Bradley and is titled “Principles of Fungicide Resistance: Focusing on Soybean and Corn Production”.

In this presentation, Bradley offers actionable details on…

·         The different factors involved in fungicide resistance

·         How resistance may occur

·         Which characteristics of fungal plant pathogens and fungicides lead to greater risks of fungicide resistance

·         Practices that can be utilized to manage fungicide resistance

By the end of this talk, consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the soybean industry will better understand the basic principles of fungicide resistance of corn crops.
