SARNIA, ON - Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) has received funding approval to proceed with a major biomass to sugars project with the ultimate objective of bringing a full-scale, commercial cellulosic sugar plant to Southern Ontario by 2018.
“This is an exciting project that will take one year to complete, extending to Oct. 31, 2015,” said Dr. Murray McLaughlin, Executive Director of BIC. “Our evaluation and recommendations over the coming months will consider economics, availability and supply of non-food biomass such as corn stover and wheat straw, available conversion technologies and potential markets.”
This project was funded in part through Growing Forward 2 (GF2), a federal - provincial - territorial initiative. The Agricultural Adaptation Council (AAC) assists in delivery of GF2 in Ontario. The project w as also financially support by BIC and its partners, which include the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO), the Cellulosic Sugar Producers Cooperative, BioAmber Inc . , the Integrated Grain Producers Co - operative Inc. (IGPC) , Jungbunzlauer Canada Inc. , and Ontario Agri - Food Technologies (OAFT).
