Breakfast served at Wilmot Orchards on October 4

(Newcastle) Last month, Stanlee Farms in Avonmore drew over 2300 people to the second annual Breakfast on the Farm. Now, thanks to a collaboration with Foodland Ontario and L.H. Gray, Farm & Food Care Ontario is proud to announce 2014’s second Breakfast on the Farm event at Wilmot Orchards in Newcastle Ontario.

The farm, named after the nearby Wilmot Creek, is owned and operated by Charles and Judi Stevens and features 83 acres of apples, as well as nine different varieties of pick-your-own blueberries over an additional 21 acres.

Visitors to the farm will receive a complimentary all-Ontario breakfast and farm tour. Guests will meet the farm family, visit the orchards, and have a chance to see a falconer display how his birds keep wild robins and waxwings from preying on the Stevens’ blueberry crop. Patrons can, in addition, investigate the Orchard’s giant fans and sound canons -employed to mitigate the risk posed by frost and hail- as well as a farm animal display.

There were over 125 volunteers, including many local farmers, at last month’s event in Avonmore, and Farm & Food Care is again looking for those willing to share their time and passion for local food. Approximately 80 people are needed to run the event, and 20 volunteers have already signed up.

The event is supported by many national, provincial and regional farm g and agri-businesses including L.H. Gray, Foodland Ontario, and a number of other organizations. The Breakfast on the Farm program was launched in Ontario in 2013 with more than 2,000 attendees to the first event.
