Canada: US West Coast crop cuts into Ontario apple market

Pressure on the apple market from a large West Coast crop within the United States is interfering with demand for Ontario grown apples. “The current demand is adequate,” states Kelly Ciceran, general manager of Ontario Apple Growers, “But current wholesale prices are below last season’s prices.”

Acreage is steady within Ontario with tree removals being supplemented with new plantings as part of standard orchard renewal. “While no new varieties are currently being introduced, Ontario apple consumers are encouraged to try new varieties like Ambrosia,” adds Ciceran.
