Canadian Angus Foundation Announces Junior Ambassador, Dick Turner Scholarship Recipient & Outstanding Young Angus Breeder

 
 
The Canadian Angus Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2017 Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador is Macy Liebreich of Radville, SK; Meghan McGillivray of Kamloops, BC received the Dick Turner Memorial Award; and Austen Anderson of Swan River, MB was selected as the Outstanding Young Angus Breeder. Awards were presented at the Canadian Angus Convention banquet this evening.
 
Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador
 
Macy Liebreich is currently working towards her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of British Columbia. Her family operation is Merit Cattle Co. In addition to 4-H involvement, she played hockey for the Weyburn AAA Goldwings,a high-level performance female hockey team and was also involved in the Junior Achievement program before starting university.
 
The Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador program selects one Canadian Junior Angus (CJA) member to be an ambassador for the Canadian Angus Association at events across Canada and one international experience. Three other CJA members competed for the award. Matthew McGillivray of Kamloops, BC; Jennifer Jermey of Ashern, MB; and Brandy Thaxterof Woodville, ON; all deserve recognition for their impressive efforts in the competition.
 
Jennifer Jermey is the Junior representative on the Manitoba Angus Association board of directors and has been involved with 4-H from 2004 through 2016. She currently attends Brandon University and is involved with her family operation, Spruce Ridge Black Angus. Through her involvement with the Manitoba Angus Association, she was a member of the organizing committee that helped plan the hosting of CAA Convention 2017.
 
Matthew McGillivray plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture with a major in Animal Science. He hopes to attend the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine followed by a career as a large animal veterinarian specializing in food animal production. Matthew is currently the treasurer of his local 4-H club, a member of the district 4-H junior council, and has established a personal purebred Angus herd with Canadian genetics.
 
Brandy Thaxter will be studying Business Administration with a Marketing major at Fleming College starting this fall. She recently obtained an Accounting Business diploma at Durham College. She has worked as a farm hand on a horse farm and at a dairy. She is currently an Ontario Junior Angus Director and President of the York Beef 4-H Club & Youth Leader.
 
Dick Turner Memorial Award
 
Meghan McGillivray is pursuing a career in sports medicine, studying physiology at McGill University. She plans to attend medical school after obtaining her degree and will also remain involved in her family's ranch, McGillivray Land and Livestock. Meghan is a member of the university's competitive cheerleading team and was both a competitive gymnast and coach. In 2016, she organized a two-day event called Beef it Up with speakers and farm tours to highlight opportunities for youth in the cattle industry. She is also the BC director on the Canadian Junior Angus board.
 
The Dick Turner Memorial Award was established after the passing of legendary Angus icon Dick Turner in July of 2010. During his lifetime, Dick committed 55 years of his career to livestock publishing and successfully promoted and advertised the Angus breed specifically through the Canadian Aberdeen Angus News magazine. It was Dick's ability to foster relationships and boundless enthusiasm that led to his successful tenure. He believed that "information is power" and was best shared with all stakeholders. Dick was a hard worker and recognized the quality of life and relationships as the most rewarding part of his job.
 
Outstanding Young Angus Breeder
 
Austen Anderson was selected as the Robert C. McHaffie Junior Ambassador in 2011, the last time the Canadian Angus Association met in Manitoba for the annual general meeting. A fifth-generation cattle producer, he started his own purebred Angus herd in 2003 while also being an active part of Anderson Cattle Company, the family purebred red and black Angus operation specializing in marketing two-year-old bulls. Anderson is the son of purebred Angus breeders Bruce and Ione Anderson. Anderson holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Regina and teaches at the local high school.
 
The Outstanding Young Angus Breeder Award recognizes an Angus breeder between the ages of 22 and 30 who has demonstrated a desire to stay involved in the Angus business for years to come based on their involvement within the breed up to this point in his or her career. The award comes with a $3,500 cash prize.
