Canadian pork producers to visit Japan in light of Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership

In light of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) being signed in Chile on March 8th, and in anticipation of its timely ratification and implementation, Canadian pork producers will be in Japan next week for a trade advocacy mission.

“During this trade advocacy mission, delegates will be able to understand the new opportunities being created by the signature of the CPTPP and how to further develop the market. Pork producers will also witness the importance of on-farm programs for international customers and see how their product is marketed to buyers in Japan,” said Rick Bergmann, Chair of the Canadian Pork Council (CPC) who will be taking part in the trade advocacy mission along with 13 other Canadian pork producers.

On Monday, March 5th, during the first day of the mission, delegates will meet with Lawrence MacAulay, Canadian Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Foods, and will visit a retail store in Kawasaki where they will witness first-hand how exporters market their product on their behalf.

Delegates will visit several retailers and witness in-store demos on Tuesday, and take part in the food expo Foodex on Wednesday where a Canada Pork International representative will be marketing Canadian pork to Japanese buyers. Meetings with government officials are also planned during this trip.

Canadian pork producers export over 70% of their product to over 100 countries, Japan
currently being the second-biggest market for Canadian pork. In 2017 alone, 252,147 tonnes of Canadian pork and pork products were exported to Japan, a value of $1.2 billion dollars.
