Canola Growers Reminded to Check Their Losses

Canola growers in some areas of Saskatchewan are looking at good crops overall this season, but when harvest time comes around, they want to make sure they get the most of it.

Canola Council of Canada Agronomist Shawn Shenko says with the province's goal of 52 bushels per acre by the year 2025, farmers will want to gain two bushels of harvest management.

"It is key to make sure you are not putting that canola out the back of the combine, so measuring those losses. Also getting that proper slot timing especially if you had cut worm, field beetle damage and maybe made the crop a bit variable. Making sure you are not in there to early and losing on those green patches, making sure you are doing that proper slot timing or straight cut timing."

Shenko adds farmers should check multiple times in a day to see what is coming out of the back of the combine, and not solely rely on their loss monitor.

"You cant really rely on a loss you have to remove and flip that chopper up and have that strong dropping collect in the collecting pan and actually measuring your losses to see what is actually coming out the back of the combine. Then you can calibrate the monitor to that but it is good to even check multiple times in the day because that crop changes with humidity and heat it goes through the combine completely differently."
