Limagrain Cereals will bring significant added value to western Canadian agriculture by developing new varieties of cereals, with a specific focus on wheat, using the most advanced technologies currently available.

CANTERRA SEEDS and Limagain have worked together as partners since 2012, and today's announcement is a result of the growth of that relationship as well as some key regulatory changes that have occurred as a result of the passing of the Agriculture Growth Act this February.

Hansen explains that this ambitious evolution of the partnership between the two companies will enhance CANTERRA SEEDS capacity to deliver the premium genetics farmers demand today to grow their businesses.

CANTERRA SEEDS’ partner, Limagrain, is a farmer-owned cooperative.  It is one of the most extensively integrated agricultural companies in Europe. In addition to being the fourth largest seed company in the world, they are a global leader in wheat and other cereal grains.  Bruno Carette, CEO at Limagrain Field Seeds is also looking to the future in Western Canada.  Limagrain Cereals Research Canada will work collaboratively with the extensive global cereal breeding network Limagrain has built as well as partner with existing programs in Western Canada.

CANTERRA SEEDS own Director, Industry & Regulatory Affairs Erin Armstrong will lead Limagrain Cereals Research Canada as CEO.  Jim Peterson, of U.S.-based Limagrains Cereal Seeds, has been appointed Vice President of Research.  Their most immediate and pressing tasks in the short term will be a search for a senior breeder as well as liaising with the existing cereal seed development network in Canada and throughout the Limagrain group.

Beyond this joint venture, Limagrain and CANTERRA SEEDS have strengthened their partnership to enhance the distribution of cereals in Western Canada. To that end, Limagrain has agreed to acquire a minority stake in CANTERRA SEEDS (HOLDINGS) and Limagrain will have the right to appoint representatives to the board of directors of CANTERRA SEEDS (HOLDINGS).
