The percentage of corn planting completed across the province ranges variably, depending on where you farm.
That from Pam de Rocquigny, general manager for the Manitoba Corn Growers Association and the Manitoba Wheat and Barley Growers Association.
"For the central and eastern regions of Manitoba, we're seeing probably over 75 per cent complete," she said. "Some individual producers have actually finished their corn planting for the season, so that's great news. Out in the southwest there has been some planting done, but they're estimating overall right now that percentage is fairly low. If we look into the Interlake region, they're about 60 per cent done in the south Interlake area."
De Rocquigny notes there are some corn fields that are already starting to emerge.
Statistics Canada is predicting to see about 475,000 acres of grain corn planted in Manitoba this year, up almost 40 per cent from last year.
Meanwhile, planting of spring wheat in Manitoba is wrapping up in many areas.
"Seeding has been progressing quite well in a lot of the areas across the province, I'd probably say in areas of central Manitoba, eastern Manitoba, the south Interlake area; they're probably estimating the majority of their spring wheat acres are actually planted and in the ground and some of the earlier seeded acres are also just starting to emerge as well."
