Coulter honored among '40 under 40'

ST. PAUL, Minn. — University of Minnesota Extension corn agronomist Jeff Coulter has been recognized as one of Vance Publishing's "40 Under 40," honoring leadership among individuals contributing to efforts to double food production by 2050.

"This is a well-earned recognition. Dr. Coulter's work is focused on increasing food production to meet the demands of a growing population while helping farmers reduce their environmental footprint," said Bev Durgan, Extension dean. "I am confident that his research and education will help our agriculture industry feed our ever-increasing population while conserving and protecting our vital natural resources."

Coulter, an associate professor, works closely with Minnesota corn farmers at 15 on-farm research sites, as well as University of Minnesota Research and Outreach Centers at five locations. He is at the forefront of research on alfalfa rotations and their role in reducing the need for nitrogen-based fertilizers while maintaining corn yield. Through his outreach to agriculture professionals and their one-to-one work with farmers, his research reaches thousands of Minnesota producers every year.

"I'm passionate about corn and alfalfa rotation research and its impact," Coulter said. "We're gaining new insights and knowledge through Extension's work with farmers and ag professionals. We learn a lot from each other and it's exciting to build upon what we've gained so far."

The Minnesota Corn Research & Promotion Council and the Minnesota Corn Growers Association congratulated Coulter jointly, noting "this honor reflects the great work Jeff Coulter has done to help Minnesota's corn growers increase yields, manage inputs and reduce the economic and environmental risks of corn production."

A native of Hartley, Iowa, Coulter earned his doctorate from the University of Illinois in 2008 and came to the University of Minnesota and Extension the same year.
