Cow-Calfenomics 2017/2018 is being offered this fall and winter at a number of Alberta locations.
“Cow-Calfenomics is an information session designed for Alberta’s beef producers and their industry partners,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). “The series focuses on increasing participant’s farm business management knowledge to enhance their decision-making skills. This year’s session’s theme is Enhancing Farm Business Decisions in Alberta’s Cow Calf Sector.”
Dehod says the series brings a lot of information, ideas, and opportunities for producers to add to their management ‘tool kit’ to help them make better choices based on better information. “Equally important is the chance for producers to engage and interact with peers, helping turn information into action.”
Topics this year will include:
- The use of risk management tools in the beef industry.
- Business structures for new entrants.
- Production enterprise analysis.
- AgriProfit$ beef.
- A farmer’s guide to agricultural credit.
- The value of having a mentor.
“As well, Anne Wasko will once again be joining us to give a cattle market situation and outlook,” says Dehod. “We’re very excited to have Anne out with us again. Anne’s passion and insight for Canada’s beef industry makes her presentation a must-see.”
Cow-Calfenomics will be held in six locations across the province:
- November 14, 2017 - Brooks. Heritage Inn and Convention Centre.
- November 15, 2017 - Lethbridge. Country Kitchen Catering (in the lower level of the Keg).
- November 16, 2017 - Olds. Pomeroy Inn and Suites at Olds College.
- January 23, 2018 - Vermilion. Vermilion Regional Centre.
- January 24, 2018 - Westlock. Westlock Inn and Conference Centre.
- January 25, 2018 - Stettler. Stettler Agriculture Society.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. for all dates with the session itself running from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“AF will be delivering these sessions with the strong support of our partners, Growing Forward 2, Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), Farm Credit Canada (FCC) and the Alberta Research and Extension Council of Alberta (ARECA) member organizations,” says Dehod. “As well, the Alberta Beef Producers continue to recognize the importance of engaging our youth into the industry and is sponsoring the registration of students and producers who are 25 years of age or younger.”
The registration deadline is Tuesday, November 7, 2017, for the 2017 fall meetings, and Tuesday, January 16, 2018, for the 2018 winter meetings. The registration fee is $30 (GST is included in the price) and includes lunch.
