Crop Quality A Concern Around The World

The weather and crop specialist with CWB Market Research says the entire globe is experiencing quality issues during this year's harvest.

Bruce Burnett says winter wheat in western Canada has shown quality problems while spring wheat in the US could also see some improvement.

He notes crops in the US have shown lower than average protein amounts this year with fusarium head blight also becoming a concern in areas such as central North Dakota.

The recent moisture has been welcome for the corn crop, however.

"In the US the corn crop still is going very well," said Burnett. "That certainly will help that corn fill out. It does look like it's going to be a big corn crop as well as big soy bean crop coming their way."

He added cooler temperatures have slowed things down a bit.

"We do have some concerns about how late the crop is in parts of Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and Michigan because temperatures have been cool enough to delay development significantly. In terms of crop size this does look like its going to be a record corn crop in the US this year."

Burnett says moisture has also delayed harvest in Europe, adding a lot of the wheat crop is not make the milling grade and will be used as seed instead. He says the late rains and poor harvest has also slowed the pace of fall field work which will delay some September planting.
