Dairy Farmers Urge Government To Stand Pat In TPP Negotiations

Dairy Farmers of Canada is hoping that Canada holds its ground in the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Negotiations.

President Wally Smith doesn't want to see any change to the supply management system.

He says there is a big difference between the way US and Canadian dairy farmers do business.

"Unlike other jurisdictions, especially our neighbour to the south, we do not have any subsidies of any sort, no direct payments to farmers, no indirect infrastructure subsidies. They are allowed to maintain domestic support through their farm bill because the TPP negotiations don't discuss domestic support. The TPP negotiations simply discuss tariff reduction or tariff elimination and that would be a very unlevel playing field for Canadian dairy farmers."
