Ever Wondered What It Would Be Like To Work On A Dairy Farm?

By Beverly Przystas

Upcoming 4-H Exploration Days offers an opportunity for youth to learn more about the dairy industry.

Michigan State University Extension 4-H Youth Development is offering a unique three-day event for youth ages 12 to 19 years-old.  Called 4-H Exploration Days, this annual pre-college program attracts more than 2,500 participants state wide.

Held on the campus of Michigan State University (MSU), the event gives youth a chance to experience college life as they live and eat in dorms and take age-appropriate classes across campus. More than 200 classes are offered to youth, who can select one to two classes on topics they would like to learn more about.

In the Business and Entrepreneurship section of this year’s event, four different classes will be held. An exciting component of this program is “Life on a Dairy Farm,” where youth are able to learn more Michigan’s dairy industry. Youth will be able to take a trip to the MSU Dairy Teaching and Research Center and learn what it takes to run a dairy farm.  Youth will also get a chance play the game “Life on a Farm” to learn about being a dairy farmer.  Those who attend this class will also learn about MSU‘s dairy-related academic programs and visit the MSU Dairy Store.

4-H Exploration Days is designed to give youth a chance to learn new ideas, techniques and skills they can use personally and back home in their local 4-H clubs. A big part of these event is also providing youth with opportunities to learn about different careers and personal interests, as well as meet new people and develop new friendships across the state.

To attend, youth must register through their county MSU Extension office.  Youth must also be at least 12 years of age and be willing to abide by the Michigan 4-H Youth Code of Conduct.
