Farmers Have Lots Of Choice When Selecting Canola Variety

Farmers have more options than ever when it comes to selecting a canola variety.

Justine Cornelsen is an agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada.

She explained what's new for 2018.

"With canola, the main kind of portfolio that a lot of producers focus on now are harvestability, so new straight cut varieties and then disease resistance. So that's for mainly blackleg and clubroot, and we are starting to get a few sclerotinia tolerant...Of course, usually yield is kind of the number one go-to option, what producers will be looking at and then kind of tailor their other priorities after that."

Cornelsen talked about what's new in terms of herbicide resistance.

"This is actually the first year where we've had a new addition of herbicide Group 2 canola. So in the past, it's typically been a Liberty Link Roundup Ready and Clearfield system. We've got a new company from the States that's getting varieties registered here in Canada. So that's, Cibus, they offer a new SU-tolerant canola."
