Flea Beetles Looking To Take Advantage Of Frost Damaged Canola

Canola growers in Manitoba are assessing the damage after the frost event that hit late last week.

Temperatures were reported to dip as low as minus six in some areas.

Angela Brackenreed, agronomist with the Canola Council of Canada, says insects could become a concern.

"Now that these plants have been stressed a little bit and there's less green growth there, they could be more vulnerable to flea beetle feeding. A reminder that the economic threshold is 50 per cent defoliation, but [farmers] should be ready to spray at 25 per cent."
