Providing Food Safety Training and Certification Opportunities for Ontario Farmers
With support from the Greenbelt Fund, more Ontario farmers will be serving up fresh, safe, local produce for all Ontarians to enjoy.
Through the Introduction to Food Safety Training project, the Fund will help farmers to better understand the basics of food safety and how to get certified so that they can access larger markets such as schools, hospitals, and grocery stores. This project will assist farmers in implementing and documenting food safety procedures on their farms to help them obtain CanadaGAP certification. Certification is becoming increasingly important to be able to sell to larger customers including distributors, corporate foodservice companies, and retailers.
“Ontario farmers work hard to bring us delicious local foods that are safe for our families. It is important that they are provided with the tools they need to ensure the quality of their product,” says Burkhard Mausberg, CEO of the Greenbelt Fund. “With this project, we’re helping farmers gain access to larger markets and increase economic activity within their communities.”
Introduction to Food Safety Training will help up to 20 farmers across Ontario.
This project was funded in part through Growing Forward 2 (GF2), a federal-provincial-territorial initiative. The Agricultural Adaptation Council assists in the delivery of GF2 in Ontario.
