Hay Market Demand And Price Report For The Upper Midwest As Of August 8, 2016

Demand and Sales Activity

Hay price s were steady when compared to the previous report . S mall lots of small square bales did influence hay price . Overall there is limited high quality hay in the market and a large volume of lower quality hay at lower prices.

For Nebraska , demand remains light with slow movement o f hay . Prices were steady to $ 5 .00 lower at the market.

For Iowa , supply is good with lower demand and lower prices . Wet weather has cause d very little dairy quality hay to be available for the market .

In South Dakota , steady prices fr om limit ed sales , which makes it difficult to get an accurate comparison . Demand is light at best. Very few sales reported as farmers are only purchasing what they need at the present time .

In I llinois , demand is light to moderate with heavy offerings . Prices are steady though weaker when compared to the previous year. Rainfall has elim inated drought concern s and delayed hay harvest .

For Missouri, supply of hay is moderate , demand is light, and prices are steady . High temperature and humidity has caused many areas to receive heavy rainfall amounts . However, rainfall has not been widespread across the state and some areas still have drought concerns .

In Southwest Minnesota, good supply of lower qu ality hay, with light demand, and lower prices . Literally no supply of dairy quality hay at the auction . In Wisconsin , hay supply exceeds demand . Round bales are gathering on field edges . Local non - tested hay auctions have good supply of hay and weak prices reflect the supply in local areas. . Overall s traw price was steady this week. Small square bale straw a verage d $ 2 . 7 0 a bale this week (range of $ 1 . 0 0 to $6.00) .

Large square bale pr ice moved up $3.00 a bale from the last report. The average price is $ 2 9 . 0 0 per bale (range of $ 1 4 . 00 to $ 4 5 .00) . L arge round bale straw prices remained steady with average price of $ 3 0 .00 per bale (range of $2 0 .00 to $ 4 1 .00) . There are concerns if wet weather continues in the mid - west that ground may be too wet for baling corn stalks, thus increase demand for straw .
