Lay Off Insecticides Before Cutting Canola

With the time for swathing canola approaching, the Canola Council of Canada is reminding growers to respect the pre-harvest intervals when spraying for insects.

"We should be thinking of pre-harvest intervals on any pesticides we might be using," says Angela Brackenreed, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. "Fortunately there has been very little insect pest activity in the canola crop to date, but that can change and I recommend keeping an eye out for bertha armyworms and lygus."

The pre-harvest interval varies for different products, but it refers to the required time between spraying and cutting the crop.

"When we say cutting a crop, that means straight cutting or swathing," she notes.

Adherence to pre-harvest intervals ensures no unacceptable chemical residues will be found in harvest seed or shipments to export customers. Failing to comply with a product's pre-harvest interval is a contravention of the Pest Control Products Act.
