Henervic Farms in the Kleefeld/Randolph area reports its winter wheat crop did not survive. Spokesperson Ed Peters says it's only the second time in the last 20-25 years that their winter wheat did not make it through the cold weather of winter and spring. He adds it's a shame because it looked so good last fall.
"It had one of the most lovely starts for us, at least last fall going into the winter. A couple of weeks ago, it looked like it was going to survive. I think there are a number of things that may have affected it but that cold snap in March didn't help. We're going to be re-seeding all of ours."
Peters adds they had 1,150 acres of winter wheat. He says it would be a surprise to him if any of the winter wheat crop survived in this part of the province.
Meanwhile, Peters says they were hoping to start spring seeding later this week but with the snow yesterday, that has been set back to at least next week.
"Obviously this week would be out now. I know there were a few people near the Red River who started last week but we were wetter last fall and so we were still a few days away. And now, we're for sure a week away, possibly more."
