MASC Tallies Up Hail Claims From Weekend Storm

The province has received just over 500 crop hail claims so far this year.

Almost half of those are a result of the storm that occurred this past weekend.

David Van Deynze is the manager of claims services with Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC).

He says not all crops that were hit with hail will be lost.

"Some of them do recover better, and that's largely due to the stage of growth that they're in," explained Van Deynze. "Cereal crops that are real young usually recover quite well from hail, similar with canola...Corn on the other hand doesn't handle hail as well once it starts to get bigger."
