MB Farm Products Marketing Council To Hear Chicken Farmers' Appeal

Manitoba Chicken Producers' new Specialty Quota Program is going to be evaluated by the Manitoba Farm Products Marketing Council.

That from Direct Farm Manitoba President Phil Veldhuis, who says he's been informed that the council will hear an appeal launched by a handful of chicken farmers who feel they've been hurt by the program.

The program would require birds be slaughtered at an inspected plant, while specialty quota would be capped at 30,000 kilograms.

Veldhuis explains their concerns.

"Our concerns are that they really didn't think too much about what these folks would need or want or be able to do when they designed the program," he said. "It's really just a scaled down version of what their large producers do but without the economies of scale that help them achieve that. It's got a lot of problems."
