More U-S Hogs Pushing Ontario Prices Down

An Ontario Pork spokesman says provincial hog prices could drop another 30 dollars between now and mid-October.

Patrick O’Neil bases that forecast on the October futures market.

That would be a continuation of the sharp drop in hog prices over the past few weeks.

Although PED appears to have reduced U-S hog marketings, O’Neil says the reduction doesn’t appear to be as big as some had predicted.

And he says some producers are taking advantage of the extra space in their barns to feed those hogs to heavier weights – offsetting the lower number of animals going to market.

O’Neil also suggests some producers may be marketing animals now that would normally be marketed in September to avoid the traditional increased marketings in the fall.

If that’s happening, he says there could be less of a run-up of hog supplies in September, which could help slow the slide in hog prices.
