The theme of this year’s convention is the past, present and future of the dairy industry.
Retired North Dakota State University Extension Service dairyman Clarence Olson is the featured speaker for the 48th annual North Dakota Dairy Convention.
The convention will be held Nov. 5 at the Best Western Seven Seas Inn in Mandan. “Past, present, future” is the convention theme.
“This year, we are taking time to look back at our rich North Dakota dairy history,” says J.W. Schroeder, NDSU Extension dairy specialist and a conference coordinator. “Our featured speaker will share with us some of that history and how far we have come from past to present with production, breeding and dairy-applied technology.”
Olson was the NDSU Extension dairyman from 1947 to 1961.
Conference registration opens at 8 a.m. and the program begins at 10:55 a.m. with a welcome from Schroeder. Topics that will be covered throughout the day include an analysis of a Midwestern states dairy survey, North Dakota dairy development plans and the milk protection program under the new farm bill. Brian Gould, a professor in the Agricultural and Applied Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will provide the latest updates on that program.
“Many questions remain about the level of participation in the dairy milk protection plan of the new farm bill,” Schroeder says. “This meeting couldn’t come at a better time to make that decision.”
Other activities include a trade show, social and awards banquet, and the Milk Producers Association of North Dakota’s annual meeting.
“At this conference, we will have an opportunity to work together to further address the challenges facing the economic, social and environmental sustainability of dairy and food production,” Schroeder says.
