Nature Conservancy of Canada applauds new conservation funds in Ontario Budget 2018

TORONTO - The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) welcomes the Government of Ontario's commitment to nature contained in Budget 2018, released Wednesday. New funding has been earmarked to protect our forests, wetlands, lakes and rivers.

An investment of $15 million over three years affirms Ontario's commitment to protecting our lands and waters and the variety of species they sustain. An additional investment in the Canada – Ontario Lake Erie Action Plan, will further support the health of Lake Erie.

Natural capital is one of Ontario's greatest competitive advantages. Healthy natural systems cost-effectively support sustainable, livable communities and economic development. Nature underpins our reputation as a top destination in which to live, work and invest. Protecting the environment and growing the economy go hand-in-hand.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada and our many partners in Ontario including the land trust community, are already delivering results and ready to do more. By working together and advancing private and public conservation we can make a difference in Ontario and contribute to Canada Target 1 – the pledge to protect 17 per cent of our nation's land and inland waters by the end of this decade.
