Ontario Sheep applauds Minister Leal for proposing BRM reform at FPT meeting

The Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency (OSMA) applauds Minister Leal for highlighting the need for a comprehensive reform of the business risk management (BRM) programs.

Agriculture ministers from across Canada met in Ottawa this week to discuss the next agricultural policy framework. At this meeting, Minister Leal proposed a 12-month review of the business risk management programs. He noted that the ministers have asked officials to continue to work on a path forward that would address business risk management and other aspects of the agricultural policy framework as part of an overall package that will be presented at their July annual conference.

“We appreciate Minister Leal championing the need for a rebuild of the business risk management suite of programs and urge other provincial ministers to support this review,” says Robert Scott, Chair of OSMA. “Ensuring that BRM programs work for livestock producers is incredibly important to our industry since we do not have access to any other programs to help us manage risk.”

OSMA is pleased to see continued momentum towards reforming these programs. The sheep industry is the only livestock group involved in the AgGrowth Coalition, which has been driving the importance of this issue at both the provincial and national levels.

"It is fortunate that the sheep industry, through the National Sheep Network, has been able to participate in the AgGrowth Coalition” said Scott. “It is important that we are at the table working together with other commodities.”

The Ontario Sheep Marketing Agency (OSMA) is a producer organization representing all aspects of the sheep industry in Ontario. Established in 1985 under the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Act, OSMA’s mission is to enhance producer returns and provide consumers with premium lamb and sheep products by encouraging Ontario sheep producers to provide quality, year-round product through advocacy, industry capacity, research and market development.
