Perth County Farmer Second In Outstanding Young Farmer Competition

A Perth County farmer is this year’s Ontario Outstanding Young Farmers runner-up. Dave Arand operates Arandview Farms near Atwood along with his wife, Amy, and Dave’s sister, Peggy.

It’s a 40 thousand turkey operation cropping 12 hundred acres of corn, wheat and dry beans. The Arands use compost from the green bin recycling programs in cities including Guelph , London and Hamilton to reduce their use of commercial fertilizers.

They were nominated for the competition by Perth Ag Partners. This year’s Ontario Outstanding Young Farmer winners are Jason and Amanda O’Connell from Carleton Place.

Their Sunol Farms milks 90-95 cows and crops 15 hundred acres. They were nominated by Holstein Ontario.  The Ontario competition is one of 7 across the country. The winners in each region compete to be named Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers.

The program recognizes farmers and farm couples who exemplify excellence in their profession.
