Pest Manager App available

I often carry 5 or 6 scouting and management guides with me when walking fields to determining what pests are present and how to control them, if necessary. I find lugging these books around inconvenient and inefficient, especially when I leave the book I need in another vehicle or at home.

The pest manager app was designed to provide decision makers with all the information that they need for weed, insect and disease management in Ontario field crops. From identification, to mapping and then to control methods.

I’m looking for your input. I think we’ve made a really useful tool and I’m excited about it, but I  want to make sure it works for Ontario agricultural. That is why I’m releasing the app for the remainder of the 2015 season as a beta (test) version for you to use and I would love to get your feedback and constructive criticism. The app can be downloaded here and I’ve provided some tutorials on the ID and mapping components of the app as well as searching for management options.

Comments and feedback can be sent to mike.cowbrough@ontario.ca

Here are some quick facts about the app and frequently asked questions.

– The app currently deals with weed identification and herbicide solutions for corn, soybean and cereals. Information is being compiled for insect and disease identification and management solutions. Management solutions will include both chemical and cultural types. The target to have all pests included in the app is this coming fall (Oct, 2015).

– The app will be first available for Apple iOS devices and then Android.

FAQ’s:

Q: Where can I download the app and what version of iOS do I require?

A: Its available at the iTunes store . The app requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This app is optimized for iPhone 5, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus.

Q: Will this app be provided in french.

A: Yes

Q: Why are you only focusing on pesticide control information?

A: We’re not only focusing on pesticides, any effective control method will be added to the app. Since pesticides are used in many farming operations, it is important that the right pesticide is used at the right rate and right application timing. The goal of this app is to provide information about pesticides so that they are used correctly and when appropriate but the primary focus will be on integrated pest management. It will take time, so please be patient.

Q: How come you don’t have every weed that is found in Ontario?

A: I have chosen to only add weeds that either negatively affect agricultural production or where management information exists.
