Although corn earworm dropped somewhat, counts are hovering above a 5-6 day threshold, and reaching a 4-5 day threshold in Erie.
European corn borer is in its 2nd generation, and fall armyworm immigration is occurring.
Corn earworm (CEW)
CEW is present throughout the state. Counts dropped since last week, but in Erie are exceeding 4-5 day spray intervals, and sites in Fayette, Lancaster, Lehigh and Westmoreland counties suggest 5-6 day spray intervals. It’s possible that the presence of silking field corn is helping dilute the moth counts.
European corn borer (ECB)
ECB is in its 2nd generation. Counts are high in Huntington county. York and Clinton counties had high counts last week.
Fall armyworm (FAW)
We continue to see low rates of trap capture, with an increasing number of sites, especially in Centre, Blair and Erie counties.

Thresholds
Reproductive (tassel/silk) and late vegetative corn attracts moths. Shorten spray schedules when populations increase.
Thresholds Based on CEW Captures
Levels | CEW catch / week | Spray frequency |
---|
almost absent | 1–13 | 4 days to no spray |
very low | 14–35 | 5 to 6 day |
low | 36–70 | 4 to 5 day |
moderate | 71–349 | 3 to 4 day |
high | > 350 | 2 to 3 day |
If CEW is low, then consider ECB
Levels | ECB catch / week | Spray frequency |

almost absent | < 14 | no treatment |
very low | 15–35 | 6 day |
low | 38–70 | 5 day |
moderate | > 70 | 4 day |
